Grand Hall / Eternal: My water heater is defective

January 6, 2013

I bought this really expensive Grand Hall Eternal hot water heater (model GU195) in April 2012 and it worked fine for a while.

Over a month ago we started having problems and tried to get warranty service.  In the beginning the Grand Hall cooperated with the local contractor who sold and installed the unit.   They replaced the controller board but the unit continues to perform poorly.  The basic problem is that it doesn't heat water enough and performs way below the companies published specs.  So we don't get water that stays hot enough for a bath or a shower.

The specs for the heater show that 4.8 gallons per minute the water heater should be able to heat the water by 80 degrees.  Unfortunately my hot water heater only heats it by 54 degrees. Not too hot!

The folks at Grand Hall just can't seem to believe that their very complicated hot water heater is defective.  The company that sold it to me and services it recommenced that Grand Hall replace the unit, but so far they haven't.

  1. That’s too bad! They should replace it, especially if it is still under warranty. I encountered the same problem before and the technician told me that the problem is with the heating element. I just replaced that part and it’s back to normal, and I have a supply of hot water again.

  2. It’s frustrating when things like this happen. The manufacturer should properly address the consumer’s complaints and requests. If the consumer finds their product defective and still within its warranty, then they should replace the water heater immediately. But I hope that your heater is working now. {Althea Tumlin}

  3. This is awful! You should return the item and ask for a refund! Rather, ask them to replace the item instead. Call someone who repairs water heaters, perhaps there's something that he can do. We don't want to hassle ourselves by going back to the store and asking for a replacement, which pretty much will take a week or so.

  4. This is really an awful situation! I think you should replace it if you have all the papers of guarantee. This sort of service and product always inflicts any organization to be ruined. I think they should investigate about their products and services.

  5. Don't let there impressive warranty fool you. I have owned a 195s 2 years and 3 moths. The unit developed an internal leak but the refused the warranty because of an installation error on the exhaust vent. they said that it would cause corrosion to the metal the exhaust was near. but it would not cause the problem with the unit. Because of the exhaust issue they will not warranty the heater at all.

  6. I'll bet most of these problems occurred because the water going through the units was not treated so it is not corrosive to the heater. Installation says this when installing. Just because you have city or municipal water does not mean it is treated to be softened water. This kills all plumbing to your home. Eliminate the bigger problem first and you probably won't have to change your fixtures out for much longer than without.

    1. So you think you have to have a water treatment system in order to have a hot water heater in your house? Don't think so Mr. Unknown. That's ridiculous. Some private wells, maybe, but a city water supply?

      On the customer service note, I tried calling Eternal several times, and their number is disconnected. Lot of good that does the customer...
